In addition to providing support for its member Regional Health Improvement Collaboratives, NRHI undertakes special projects from time to time to address key issues facing regional health improvement collaboratives.
Healthcare Payment Reform
Beginning in 2006, NRHI's members realized that their efforts to improve healthcare quality and contain costs were being increasingly frustrated by healthcare payment systems that did not reward efforts to improve healthcare quality, and often financially penalized them. In response to this, NRHI organized two national summits to build consensus on the fundamental changes needed in healthcare payment systems:
- The 2007 Payment Reform Summit, attended by nearly 100 healthcare leaders from across the country, developed recommendations on the specific changes needed in healthcare payment systems.
- The 2008 Payment Reform Summit, attended by over 100 healthcare leaders from across the U.S., developed recommendations on how communities could overcome the barriers to implementing the payment reforms recommended in the 2007 Summit.
Since then, NRHI has worked to support the efforts of its member Collaboratives to advance payment reform at both the regional and national levels.
